Microsoft Sharepoint Portal Server

SharePoint and Hardware

Due to budget constraints I'm only going to be able to add 1 server to
our infrastructure for next budget year.  I want 3 products and want to
find out if it is physically possible (I don't see why not unless MS put
something in the software to prevent it) to run 3 different apps on the
same server...SharePoint Portal, Forms Server, and a proxy for Live
Communications Server.  I'm sure SharePoint and Forms shouldn't be a
problem, the only one I'm worried about is the LCS Proxy Server.

Thanks,
Tim

I wouldn't run anything but sharepoint on a server intended to have
sharepoint on it, as it can be a complete hog.  Have you thought about
running vmware or virtual PC on the server you can order - and actually
having a bit of kit powerful enough to handle 3 operating systems.

I have used Sharepoint before and realize it can be a hog, but every
single product ms has/will ever release(d) is a resource hog as they
aren't very good coders over there, but besides my bashing, I want to
stay away from the vmware method.  I am only going to have 70-100 users
on Sharepoint so I think it will be ok.  The forms server goes along
with it, and as far as my LCS proxy, I can't imagine more than a couple
people connected at any given time.  Most of my users don't have laptops
and therefore use TS when working from out of the office, but
nonetheless it's something my boss wants to have.

Given the volume you suggest, as long as the product works alongside a MOSS
installation then performance wise you should be OK, although 70 to 100
concurrent users all doing updates on Monday morning will hammer the
server - so you need to assess the throughput type as well as frequency of
your MOSS traffic.

I certainly would be testing it on development kit first. :)

I can only predict rare occassions when everyone would be on at the same
time.  Everyone's schedules are a bit staggered here so I can't imagine
the server ever being slammed with all users on at the same time.
